Introducing a new group featuring some of the UK’s finest up-and-coming jazz talents. Based in London the group performs an array of original compositions written by bandleader Phil Meadows. Combining a cocktail of influences this group appeal to a host of audiences with a passion for improvisation, beauty and groove. Phil Meadows – Saxophone
Phil is a Saxophonist, Composer and Educator based in London. His music has taken him onto some of Europe’s most respected Jazz platforms including the Bimhuis in Amsterdam where he was the youngest, only Britian and only Saxophonist in the final of the European Keep an Eye Jazz Soloist Competition 2011. In 2010 he received the George Murphy Prize for Saxophone and won the Great Northern Big Band Competition (Best Band and Best Section) with the Leeds College of Music Big Band.
Phil’s performance credits include the world famous Glastonbury Festival, Harrogate International Festival and Leeds International Jazz Conference to name but a few. Laura Jurd – Trumpet
Laura Jurd is a London based trumpet player, jazz musician and composer. In 2011 she was awarded the Dankworth prize for jazz composition 2011 and named “One to Watch” by Jazzwise magazine. As a diverse musician, she plays and writes a wide variety of music, drawing upon classical, jazz and folk influences including the work of Stravinsky, Messiaen and Bartok as well as Miles Davis, John Coltrane and the current European improvised music scene. As a trumpet player she can be found playing with a number of ensembles including the London Soundpainting Orchestra, the Matt Roberts Big Band and the Elliot Galvin Group. In addition she is director and manager of the Chaos Orchestra and is currently working with a string quartet and improvising musicians, in a project which combines elements of classical composition and improvisation.
Elliot Galvin – Piano
Elliot Galvin has played the piano since the age of 6, instantly gravitating towards jazz for its freedom of expression. He has already performed with a number of well-established musicians despite his age of only 20 years and has performed at a number of notable venues with his trio (comprised of his own compositions), including The Vortex, where he was met with a glowing review.
He has a broad range of taste and ability, studying composition as well as jazz at Trinity College of music (where he received a scholarship to study). He cites his musical influences as Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Brad Mehldau, Paul Bley, György Ligeti and Igor Stravinsky, amongst others. He also takes influence from the artistic works of painters such as Mark Rothko and the poetry of Dylan Thomas.
Conor Chaplin – Double Bass
Conor Chaplin is a bass player of great skill and versatility and in 2010 he was awarded the Peter Whittingham Award with the Jazz/Punk outfit WorldService Project, a group in which he tours extensively. As part of WSP’s Match&Fuse project he has performed at Brecon, St Germain de Calberte, Swanage, Marsden and the London Jazz Festivals as well as in Paris, Lyon, Bergen and Trondheim. Conor can also be seen performing with NYJO (national youth jazz orchestra) amongst a host of other ensembles. In 2011 he was awarded the Trinity Laban Jazz Achievement Award.
Corrie Dick – Drums
Named by Jazzwise magazine as “One to Watch for 2011” and winner of the “Up and Coming Artist” award in the 2011 Scottish Jazz Awards: Glasgow-born Corrie began his musical career as both a pianist and a trumpeter before deciding that he was to be a drummer around 2004/2005. He was soon invited to join NYJOS (National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland), Paul Towndrow’s Jazz Futures and Tommy Smith’s Youth Jazz Orchestra. It wasn’t long before Corrie had his own groups performing original material and in 2010 he recorded his debut album “Scenes For Someone”. [available here: www.corriedick.bandcamp.com]. Corrie is now based in London and can be seen performing regularly with his bands including “Pinwheel” and the “Corrie Dick Sextet”.

3point1 are features some of the UK’s finest improvising musicians. With Maxwell Sterling on Double Bass and Steve Hanley on Drums we perform a combination of exciting, enticing and intoxicating original tunes as well as some of our favourite standards. Our influences draw from the whole musical spectrum including Jazz, Ambient, World, Big Beat and Contemporary Music to create a performance that has been winning over audiences nationwide.
Not only do we enjoy playing as a trio, we love collaborating with special guests whenever possible. When 3point1 have a guest we invite the guest to contribute 50 per cent of the setlist to make each experience truly unique! Some of the trios collaborations have included London tenor saxophonist Tori Freestone and the Cinematic Orchestra guitarist Stuart McCallum.
